As the disembodied voice of the BBC’s Planet Earth and Blue Planet series, he not only chaperoned inspirational nature voyages for hosts of fellow humans, he also helped us relate to the animal world by telling stories—stories of survival, of strength in numbers, of a mother’s love, and so on. It’s through ascribing these human characteristics to animals (or is it the other way around?) that we relate to these works. So powerful is the pattern-seeking instinct within us, the desire to connect with our brethren fauna, that in some cases, the lines get blurred.
